How to build a powerful coalition for change.
A Change Coalition is the specialist team that supports a change leader. Together, they set out the ‘big picture’, provide clear direction, and become effective evangelists for the changes that need to be made.
When the going gets tough, many leaders batten down the hatches. They work all hours to get things done their way, or fall back on a divisive ‘command and control’ management style.
Our research shows that this is a mistake: lone soldiers are valiant but vulnerable, and the risks are high. Go-it-alone leaders may believe that they have achieved results, but often change has taken place only on the surface. In reality, there’s compliance without engagement; processes have changed, but behaviour has not; and people assent without altering their mind-set.
Change Coalitions make sure that this does not happen. They create channels within the organisation to promote dialogue. They work alongside the leader to become effective translators of key messages to all who will be affected by the change.
